EINSTEIN, Albert. Autograph letter signed ('A. Einstein') to his first wife, Mileva Einstein-Maric, n.p., 19 November 1944, one page, 4° (diagonal watercolour lines, possibly by a wartime censor, not obscuring text); a letter by Maja Winteler-Einstein on the verso.
EINSTEIN HELPING 'TO BRING THE GERMANS TO A WELL-EARNED DEFEAT'. Hearing that it is once again possible to write to Switzerland, Einstein sends news of himself and his household -- he himself stays healthy through diet and work; nevertheless, he has been making provision for Mileva in his will. His retirement has not much reduced his income: that only happens because of the increasing taxes, 'but I pay them, since they help bring the Germans to a well-earned defeat'. He enquires after Mileva's relatives in Yugoslavia, commenting 'It is a good thing you didn't follow my advice to go there'. Einstein's sister Maja writes on the verso of her relief in being able to communicate with Europe again, and of her thoughts of Switzerland.
