Lot Essay

This lot is exceptional in that it contains three bird pairs as opposed to the traditional five. The carpet also incorporates eight cream, teal and raspberry Karachopt square medallions. Both of these elements, along with the deep navy field, and bold apricot and aubergine colors, makes this long rug an excellent example of the Akstafa tradition. For two similar examples, please see Sotheby's New York, 1 April 2003, lot 27 and Sotheby's New York, 3 December 2002, lot 105.
