A Dutch silver-mounted mother-of-pearl snuff-box
Apparently unmarked, dated 1797
Oblong and with plain mounts, hinged cover with reeded rim and shaped thumb-piece, the sides inset with mother-of-pearl plaques carved with flowers and birds, the cover with a scene of three bacchic putti on a cloud with fruit, flowers, a wine-goblet and two doves, the interior of the cover with an inscription
8 cm. wide
The inscription reads: Gezellige Englen vreugd, in Paerlemoer gegrift, Op Lucht-Saphieren, Esmarauce en Fris kleuren: Zinspeeld op Vriendschap, in een Edel Hart Gegrift, Waar Zij van 't Borstjuweel der Frouw niet is te Scheuren. Dit zielskleinood. waardeerd op Hemelsche Waardij. Gulharte GIJSBERT.TROOST. zijne EGA en BERKHEY. 16 October 1797.
