A FINE ITALIAN SILVER-GILT JUDAICA BOOK BINDING
Unidentified maker's mark CB with head in-between, Italy, circa 1753
The covers and spine are finely pierced, embossed and chased with scrolls, foliage, flowers and flaming vases at the angles, the front cover with central oval medallion under crown, enclosing the coat-of-arms similar to this of the Jewish family Modigliani, consisting of a rooster standing on three hills, facing to the left, holding two branches in its beak, a star and crescent above, the back cover with identical medallion, enclosing the coat-of-arms similar to this of the Jewish family Ergas from Livorno, consisting of a crowned rampant lion holding a sword, fitted with a printed prayer book in Hebrew with some instructions and translations in Ladino, titled: Seder Tefillot ha-Mo'adim ke-Minhag kahal kadosh Sefaradim [Festival prayerbook according to the Sephardic rite] , Venice: Bragadini, 1753, Vinograd, Venice No. 1899, marked on the two engraved clasps, under and above the spine and on both front and back covers.
