A double signet and a small Dutch silver beaker
Apparently unmarked, The Netherlands, 18th century; the beaker with possible maker's mark of Arnoldus Wilot, Middelburg, 1798
The large circular side of the signet with a coat-of-arms and inscribed E.IOHAN.VAN DE*MANDERE*, the other oval side with the same coat-of-arms, attached by a chain and a tapering beaker, all-over engraved with geometrical lines, an upper and lower band with inscription and three oval medallions with various monograms, marked on base
4.9 cm. high (beaker)

The inscription reads: Van Deszelfs Groot-Vader E:J: Van der Mandere and Ter Zijner eerste VerJaaring, Den 16 December 1801 (2)

Lot Essay

The coat-of-arms on the seal is very likely that of Engelbert Johan van der Mandere, lord of Ouwerkerk. Van der Mandere was born in 1744 and baptised on the 25th of June in the Walloon Church in Vlissingen. Between 1765 and 1779 he was nine times alderman and five times member of the council of that town. Van der Mandere was appointed treasurer of Middelburg in 1771 and 1774, and he was governor of the Dutch East India Company from 1771 until 1795. On the 23rd of December 1766 Van der Mandere married Cornelia Adriana Ockersse (1749-1800). He died on the 9th of March 1827 in Middelburg.
