Lot Essay

A student of Gérome and Bonnat at l'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, he travelled to Morocco, Algeria, Egypt and Palestine, developing his Orientalist style. Having sent works to the Royal Academy in 1878, he subsequently reserved his pieces for the Salon de Paris, where he was awarded several medals including a gold in 1900. He was made Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1896. Works of his are exhibited in the Louvre, The Metropolitan Museum in New York, and several other noted American museums
