This work is very similar to Le Bois des oliviers á Blidah (1846) in Thompson and Wright's 'La vie et l'oeuvre de Fromentin'.

Fromentin left his rather sad childhood, and traumatically his first love behind when he arrived in Paris to study under Cabat. Taking influences from Delacroix, Decamps and Marilhat, he left for Algeria in 1846, staying there periodically for a number of years.
Many important museums hold his works, including the Orsay and the Louvre.
