Lot Essay

A related pair of candelabra is recorded in the inventory of Général Moreau in 1804:- 'deux candélabres à trois luminaires avec figures en bronze, les socles en marbre blanc 600 Fr'. Now at Fontainebleau, they are illustrated in J.P. Samoyault, Pendules et Bronzes d'Ameublement entrés sous le Premier Empire, I, Paris, 1989, no.130. The distinctive eagle-head terminals to the branches of the present candelabra was a motif sometimes employed by the ciseleur-doreur François Rémond.
