Dean began his career playing as an amateur for Burnley. In 1905, at the age of 19, he joined Lancashire as a professional, and remained with the County club for seventeen years, being the first local player to rise from amateur status to a County benefit. Dean was the premier bowler in England in 1911, when he took 175 wickets. On six occasions he had the distinction of securing nine wickets in one innings -- against Derbyshire in 1907, Warwickshire and Somerset in 1909, Somerset again in 1910, Leicestershire in 1911, and Yorkshire in 1913. He took 17 wickets for 91 runs against Yorkshire at Liverpool in 1913. Dean also played for England in two Test matches against Australia and one against South Africa in the 1912 Triangular Tournament, his 11 wickets in these three games costing 153 runs.

(2½cm) diameter, on chain; and a illuminated manuscript, dated June 24th 1912, dedicated to Harry Dean for his selection to play for England against the Australians, signed by his followers and supporters in Burnley, 22 x 14in.
