A RUSSIAN PEARL, MOSS AGATE AND RUBY LETTER OPENER
Designed as a baroque pearl with elaborate gold and enamel mount depicting Aesop's fable of the fox not being able to reach the grapes (hence the expression 'sour grapes'), the well modelled fox looking up to a cluster of cabochon rubies wrapped around the top of the pearl, to the moss agate letter opener, circa 1860, 17.5 cm. long, with Russian assay marks

Lot Essay

As one of Fabergé's main Russian competitors, Samuel Arndt was a master craftsman between 1845 and 1890 and was known for pieces in the Second Empire style and guilloché enamel.
