Statuette masculine en pierre verte représentant un personnage nu debout aux jambes légèrement écartées et arquées, aux bras placés verticalement le long du corps et à la tête allongée caractéristique comportant une large bouche et un nez épaté, aux narines perforées et aux yeux creusés profondément et probablement incrustés autrefois et aux oreilles percées.

OLMEC STONE FIGURE

Standing on slightly bent legs with muscular physique, long arms held away from the sides of the body and hands softly cupped to the back, the head with pronounced jaw, lips parted and large sunken eyes, possibly once inlaid and ears pierced.
Scholars suggest that the Olmec perceived the human figure as a conduit for animistic energies. There is art historical evidence that the human body in Olmec art was divided into different metaphysical realms. The lower part of the body was identified with the watery underworld, the torso with the terrestrial realm (occupied by humans) and the head and shoulders with the celestial sphere.
