STATUETTE EN TERRE CUITE
Jaina, Classique Final, env. 550-950 après J.C.
Statuette représentant un dignitaire féminin assis les jambes croisées dans une posture hautaine et régalienne, les mains posées sur les genoux, vêtu d'une large cape kub à bords arrondis, le visage orné d'un couvre nez allongé, portant un haut couvre-chef à bordure en escalier rejetté en arrière et décoré d'un motif frontal probablement jadis surmonté d'un ormenent incrusté, et paré de boucles d'oreilles, de bracelets et d'un important collier en perles allongées. Traces de pigment bleu sur la cape et le couvre-chef.

Of tall and regal posture, seated with legs crossed and hands resting on knees, her face with elongated nosebridge, aquiline nose, close set eyes, high forehead framed by stepped bangs and clothed in a skirt and low-slung kub, with long bead necklace and earrings, with faint remains of blue pigment.
In pre-Hispanic times the island of Jaina served, for more than five centuries as the most important burial place on the west coast of Yucatan. Jaina owes its fame to a vast number of terracotta grave figurines modeled with masterly skill.
