CIRCA 1540, WORKSHOP OF GUIDO DA MERLINO
Painted with a sculptor chisseling a life size cow from blocks of stone, surrounded by winged putti attendants, each carrying out various tasks including sharpening tools on a grinding wheel and carrying chissels and pieces of wood, in a wooded landscape with distant mountains (section from 10 to 6 o'clock broken from dish into a number of pieces and repaired, part of rim between 6 and 7 o'clock possibly a replacement, foot lacking from reverse, restored rim chip at 5 o'clock, small restored rim chip at 2 o'clock, rim with some very slight chipping and some slight cracks, areas of wear)

Lot Essay

The subject of this dish is Daedalus sculpting a model of a heifer in which Pasiphae, wife of Minos, concealed herself to be covered by the bull. She later gave birth to the Minotaur.
