Realistically painted in sombre colours, the saint shown full-length, overlaid with an elaborate repoussé chased and engraved silver oklad, the back applied with a metal plaque inscribed 'Cette icône de St Alexandre Newsky appartenait à la princesse Youriewsky, épouse de l'empereur Alexander II de Russie. Elle avait été exécutée à la grandeur de naissance (le 29 avril 1818) d'Alexandre Nicolaievitch-plus tard Alexandre II.'
