A carved wood trompe l'oeil chair
after V.P. Shutov, 19th Century
The backrest and front legs formed as a yoke and carved with a Russian adage, the back legs partly spirally fluted with plain stretcher and central support formed as a balalaika, the seat caved at the front to simulate draped cloth, decorated in the pan-Slavic style, with a carved pair of gloves at the back, the arms as axes, apparently unmarked
