Born in Germany, Theodor Horschelt studied in Munich and is one of very few Russian or foreign artists to give a accurate visual account of the conquest of the Caucasus by the Russians and the redition of Shamil in 1857. His Caucasian character studies and watercolours depicting the Caucasian landscape capture the essence of the region and record the fauna of the area, in particular the horses.
The present painting was executed in the 1850s during Horscheldt's travels through Spain and Algeria. The decoration on the spandrels of the frame are reminiscent of the scenes that he executed during his stay in the Caucasus and which recount the conquest of this region and which have been extensively reproduced in Russian books on the subject at the end of the 19th Century.
