Lot Essay

This design for the candlestick is unusual with the elaborate decoration and use of strapwork and grotesque masks on the shoulders, which have parallels with German work of the period. They form part of small group of candlesticks of this design by Thomas Farren, the Subordiate Goldsmith to King George I and II. A silver-gilt pair of 1728 are illustrated in C. Hartop, The Huguenot Legacy, London, 1996, p.376, where he notes that a similar set of ten, engraved with the Royal arms were in the Spencer collection at Althrop and discussed by A. Grimwade in 'Silver at Althrop II', The Connoisseur, March 1963, p.3.
