Mark of John Crouch and Thomas Hannam, London, 1787
Circular, on four gadrooned bracket feet, with gadrooned and beaded borders, the field engraved with a coat-of-arms with Prussian baron's and earl's coronet above, the reverse later engraved with differing coat-of-arms, marked on reverse

The arms are those of are those of Clarendon quartering Hyde with the Royal arms of Prussia in pretence, for Thomas, 2nd Earl of Clarendon of the second creation (1753-1824), M.P. for Christchurch bewteen 1774 and 1780 and subsequently M.P. for Helston until 1786. He left the Commons on his father's death in 1786 when he succeeded to the Earldom and the Prussian barony. His father had been created a Baron of the Kingdon of Prussia having been ambassasor to the Royal Prussian court in 1782. King George III granted special dispensation for the foreign title to be borne by the family (see note to lot 700).
The arms are those of Forbes with a crescent of difference for Maria Eleanor (d.1844), daughter a co-heir of Admiral the Honourable John Forbes (d.1796), second son of George 3rd Earl Granard (1685-1765). Maria Eleanor married John, 4th Earl of Clarendon of the second creation (1757-1838) in 1791.
