Palermo, 1622-1624, with Consul's mark of Francesco Raguseo, the maker's mark GV attributed to Giancola Viviano
Circular, repoussé and chased with a broad border of beading, guilloche, shells and foliage, the sides of the well with a frieze of waves with sea-creatures and birds with shells and strapwork on a partly-textured ground, the raised centre with similar bands and centred with an enamelled coat-of-arms, marked on border

Lot Essay

A similar dish of the same year struck with the same Consul's mark is the Museo Nazionale Pepoli di Trapani and is illustrated in M. Accasina, I Marchi delle Argenti e Oreficerie Siciliane, Trapani, 1976, p.48, pl. V. fig. 7. The maker Giancola Viviano is later recorded to have worked in the Cassa Reliquiario di Santa Rosalia nella Cattedrale di Palermo in the period 1631-1637.
