Le Pergole Torte--Vintage 1990
Tuscany. Montevertine
In original wooden case without original lid

Tasting note: This wine was created in 1977 by the wealthy Sergio Manetti from old clones of Sangiovese grown on an 8-ha vineyard in the Chianti zone. Aged in oak barrels, the wine became a new 'Super-Tuscan' vin da tavola. I was hardly aware of it before attending a tasting conducted by the late Sergio's son, Martino. He told us that 1990 was a perfect growing season. The grapes were harvested in the first week of October, earlier than usual. First noted in 1996 at Eigensatz tasting of 1990's, finding it somewhat undeveloped and austere though a good flavour. Next at Pergole Torte vertical in London. Pink-tinged, striving to mature, 'smoky', fragrant, opening up richly; fairly sweet and full-bodied, rich, tangy, very good length, tarry tannins. ***(**). M.B. (May 2001)
