FIRST EDITION of Boerhaave's first book and the foundation for his European reputation. "It is the first publication of his lectures at Leiden and is divided into four parts covering physiology, pathology, hygiene, and therapeutics" (Heirs of Hippocrates). The detailed notes in the text margins and on the interleaved sheets are presumably from a lecture the American born John Redmond attended in Leiden in 1747-48, after Boerhaave's death. Redmond graduated on July 15, 1748, defending his thesis De arbortu and practised in Philadelphia. A letter from Dr. Lindeboom, dated March 22, 1972 to Jeremy Norman explaining the provenance of this book is laid in. A note by Dr. Luyendijk-Elshout explains the origin of the drawings after Vesling, Vesalius, Wills and Bartholin.
