16 volumes in 8 (including plate atlases), 2o (422 x 320 mm). 8 engraved titles, hand-colored lithographed frontispiece, and 726 lithographed plates (mostly hand-colored) after Nicolas Henri Jacob, including 11 folding (some spotting and discoloration, folding plates occasionally with spotting along folds, approximately 50 browned). (Some browning and spotting to text.) Contemporary French red quarter morocco gilt (vols. 2,7 and 8 rebacked preserving original spines, some rubbing). Provenance: Ch. FIRST EDITION of "one of the most beautifully illustrated anatomical and surgical treatises ever published in any language" (Heirs of Hippocrates 1569). Nicolas Jacob was a pupil of David and made his drawings from dissections and other anatomical preparations, some of which were prepared by Claude Bernard. Bourgery studied medicine at Paris and interned under Laënnec and Dupuytren and won gold medals for excellence from the Paris faculty. The work is divided into four parts which cover descriptive anatomy, surgical anatomy and techniques, general anatomy and embryology and microscopic anatomy. Waller 1372; Wellcome II, p. 214. (8)
