[BROWNE, Thomas]. A True and Full Coppy of that which was most imperfectly and surreptitiously printed before under the name Religio Medici. [London:] Printed for Andrew Crooke, 1643.
8o (142 x 92 mm). Engraved title. (Without A2-8 as often [see below], some soiling and spotting, title a bit short.) Contemporary calf (rebacked preserving original spine).
FIRST AUTHORISED EDITION, Keynes's first collation, though lacking A2-8 which he notes: "in many copies, otherwise complete, these six leaves are not to be found at all... Copies lacking these leaves are consequently not necessarily 'imperfect.'" This edition of Religio Medici, the author's first book, followed the two unauthorised editions of 1642. The third edition, published in 1643, also by Andrew Cooke, was authorized, and not only corrected printing and textual errors, but also modified the tenor of some of the more dogmatic assertions. The book was a great success, reprinted eleven times during the author's lifetime and translated into Latin, Dutch, French and German. Keynes 3; Wing B5169.
