FIRST EDITION, with title dated 1805. Humboldt and Bonpland travelled in South America and Mexico between 1799 and 1805, collecting detailed information in many fields of natural history, but particularly on the geographical distribution of plants. They acquired over 60,000 plant specimens on their travels, many of them previously unknown in Europe. This work was reprinted in 1807 with minor changes -- an extra half-title, general title, and with the plate colored -- as Volume I of the 34 volume Voyage aux régions quinoxiales du nouveau continent, fait en 1799, 1800, 1801, 1802, 1803 et 1804, published between 1807 and 1834.
