BINDING: contemporary Augsburg binding (Kyriss shop 88, Jagd-Rolle IV, active ca 1498-1514) of blind-panelled goatskin over wooden boards, sides panelled with quadruple fillets, outer panel of floral roll (Kyriss 3=Schwenke-Sammlung Ranke 189), inner panel on upper cover of plaited ropework roll (Schwenke-Sammlung Stäbchen 37), lower panel with a hunting roll (Kyriss 5=Schwenke-Sammlung Jagd 15), "Mesue" lettered at top, spine with Kopfstempel tools, chased brass center- and corner-pieces, pair of chased brass fore-edge catchplates with cast inscription, one brass clasp (one clasp lacking, the other with strap renewed, spine a bit dried and cracked). Provenance: Joseph Onde (inkstamp on pastedown).
The medical works which circulated under the name of Mesue the younger were among the most popular in the Middle Ages and the first to be printed. The Liber servitoris by Abulcasis which accompanies them here describes medical preparations from minerals, plants and animals, and "represents an early example of chemistry applied to the practice of medicine" (Campbell, Arabian medicine, p.90).
