Ruysch's skill as an anatomist was second to none and he developed his own methods of injecting cadavers and was able to preserve them for years. In the summer of 1696, he announced the dissection of bodies which "appear still to be alive but which have been dead for about two years" (quoted in DSB). Ruysch had many friends and admirers, but also several critics, among them Bidloo, Vieussens and the other contemporary authors represented in these exchanges of letters.
