Apparently unpublished and a late work, the composition seems to derive from the illustration by J. T. de Berij in the vulgate, published in 1609 in Mainz where the disposition of the camels and main figures are similar to that in the present work. The moor on the left and the servant carrying an urn probably derive from Hans Witdoeck's engraving of 1638 after Rubens' picture of Abraham and Melchisedeck (VS no. 22).
