Lot Essay

The composition seems to be partially indebted to Bernard van Orley's Annunciation of circa 1518 in the National Museum, Oslo. However, the paint handling and the rendering of detail in the present picture are both indicative of the work of an Antwerp artist from the next generation, close in style to Marcellus Coffermans (active 1549-1578).
