Royal 4° (224 x 160mm). Gothic type, double column, initial spaces, one initial decorated in gold, initials supplied alternately in red and blue, some paragraph marks in red. (Marginal light dampstaining, occasional browning, few small wormholes, lacking title page, the lettering being attached to a new leaf.) Contemporary blindtooled calf over wooden boards, brass furniture, 2 brass fore-edge clasps (rebacked, restored, furniture modern). Provenance: early bibliographical note

Alphonsus de Spina was a Spanish Jew who became a Franciscan. He played a leading role in the Kingdom of Castille, being at the same time bishop, professor at the University of Salamanca and confessor of King John. His work Fortalitium Fidei, concerning mainly Judaism and Islam, was influential on the court's policy.
