FIRST EDITION. The Knights Hospitaller of St John of Jerusalem, having settled on Rhodes in 1309, were besieged by Mehmet II in 1480 in an attempt to oust them from the strategically important island. The attack was repulsed, and the island only fell to Suleiman the Magnificent in 1522, when the remaining Knights were allowed to retire to Malta. HC *5868; BMC V, 283; GW 7860; Goff C-994.
