SAVONAROLA, Hieronymus (1452-1498). Epistole a diversi. [Florence: Bartolommeo di Libri, after 14 August 1497].

Chancery 4° (195 x 135mm). Roman type, 2 (of 3) woodcuts, a friar praying, and the crucifixion, white on black woodcut initials. (Lacking final leaf with third woodcut, a ladder of devotion (supplied in facsimile) a little marginal staining.) Modern library leatherette. Provenance: Ned J. Nakles (sale Christie's New York, 17 April 2000, lot 139).

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this collection of devotional tracts, letters and prayers. Three of the letters and the Regola utile a tutti religiosi were previously printed separately by di Libri and others; others were more recent works, the latest date given being the eve of Assumption, 1497. The first two woodcuts were part of di Libri's general stock; the ladder cut appeared only here. Di Libri, more than any other printer, helped diffuse Savonarola's writings and sermons. HCR 14451; BMC VI, 651; Polain(B) 3453; Goff S-196.
