THOMAS AQUINAS (c.1225-1274, Saint). Super quarto libro Sententiarum. Venice: [Johannes Herbort, de Seligenstadt] for Johannes de Colonia, Jenson et Socii, 24 June 1481.

Chancery 2° (298 x 200mm). Gothic type, double column, printer's device in red, initial spaces, red lombard initials, rubricated. (Margins reinforced in first quire, one short neat tear, marginal wormtrack in one quire, a few wormholes towards the end, a little light marginal dampstaining, some spotting.) Modern leather over bevelled wooden boards, red speckled edges, 2 clasps.

Johannes Herbort began printing in 1475 in Padua. His last book from this press, Monte's Repetorium utiusque juris (16 November 1480) was rapidly followed by his first Venetian book, Zabarellis' Super Clementis (28 January 1481). The latter work was the beginning of his short-lived association with de Colonia and Jenson - by November of the same year Herbort was working in Venice independently. His last book was published there in October 1484, one year after his death. BMC notes that Sheet E 4 of its copy contains 62 lines of text. The present copy keeps with the 56 lines, as throughout. HC *1484; BMC V, 301; Polain(B) 3735; Goff T-171.
