In 1919, Robert Wiene directed a film in Germany that changed the face of cinema. The film not only broke all the rules, but forever changed the rules by which films were made. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is told from the perspective of its lead character, revealed in the final reel to be a madman. The film had a strong impact on such great German directors of the twenties as Fritz Lang, Paul Leni, and G. W. Pabst, and influenced many American directors as well. In 1921, a daring Sam Goldwyn brought the film to the United States. The unusual sets and direction and the memorable performance of Conrad Veidt still fascinate audiences today.
