The rectangular top with moulded border above a frieze drawer with a hinged front, on octagonal panel-headed tapering legs joined by a concave-fronted undertier, terminating in ormolu caps and castors, restorations to the veneers, including the top

Lot Essay

With its beautifully figured veneers and distinct canted legs, this writing table is characteristic of the elegant style of Adam Weisweiler of the late 1780s. He executed various examples with slightly varying mounts, which include one, formerly in the collection of the Comte de Salverte, sold Sotheby Parke Bernet, 14 and 15 March 1981, lot 94 which was subsequently sold from the Keck Collection, Sotheby's, New York, 5 December 1991, lot 39. A further example, bearing the brands of Château de Versailles and of Villeneuve-L'Etang, was sold at, Sotheby's Monaco, 27 May 1980, lot 754 and is discussed by P. Lemonnier, Weisweiler, Paris, 1983, p. 184 ref. 134. Another example was sold Christie's, Monaco, 2 July 1993, lot 216.
