Lot Essay

Clodion (1738-1814) was most famed for his statuettes and small figural groups executed in bronze and terracotta. They were often informal frivolous and erotic in nature. And as such were more applicable stylisticly to the classical ideals of France prior to the revolution. The decoration of these urns is in keeping with this style. Similar examples particularly in relation to the treatment of the masks beneath the spouts are hold in the Wallace Collection; no. F348 and S32.
