Lot Essay

Saint John is a relatively rare subject matter for Malines. Another Malines figure of Saint John is in the collection of the Musée Grobet-Labadie, in Marseille. Saint John is here portrayed with a chalice issuing a pair of dragon's head, from which he is supposed to have been given poison and survived.
