Lot Essay

The octafoiled tray-top table is supported on a pillar and tripod 'claw' in the manner of 'Tea Kettle Stand' patterns in Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 3rd ed. 1762 (pl. 55); and Ince and Mayhew's Universal System of Household Furniture, 1762 (pl.14). It is designed in a more 'Chippendale' manner than an oak 'Gillows' table, with similar patterned pillar, sold Christie's London, 16 September 2004, lot 63.
