Harry (Henry Richard) Goodwin (1860-1925) was the son of a builder from Maidstone, Kent. He was the elder brother of Albert Goodwin who was taught by Arthur Hughes and travelled to Italy with John Ruskin and Joseph Severn. The two brothers visited the Italian lakes and Lucerne in 1887. He exhibited extensively including at the Alpine club, The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and the Grosvenor Gallery. His titles at the Royal Academy include Arundel Castle and the Autumn Chorale, Canterbury.

All Saints Church and the Bishops Palace from the Medway, Maidstone is certainly one of the artist's most impressive works. The Silhouette of the Tudor buildings is balanced against their reflection in the still waters of the river and the whole composition is given a warm glow of evening sunlight.
