Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich Romanov (1878-1918) was Nicholas II's nominated successor as Tsar of Russia. In 1906 he eloped with Natalia Wulfert, a twice-divorced commoner and in doing so alienated himself from his family, only to return to Russia at the outbreak of the First World War. Despite Nicholas abdicating in his favour in 1917 Grand Duke Mikhail was imprisoned and executed the following year.
