Lot Essay

The rectangular and cut-cornered tea-chest, with carrying-handled lid, is designed in the George III antique manner, and jewelled with 'cameo' medallions and tablets framed in Etruscan-pearled borders of facetted steel, that is likely to have been executed by Matthew Boulton (d.1809) of Birmingham. A related cameo-enriched tea-chest of ivory and steel was sold Christie's West Dean Park Sale, 2,3 and 7 June 1986, lot 152.
