Lot Essay

The artificial limestone statue of the 17th century court dwarf Sir Jeffrey Hudson (d.1682) is likely to have been executed by Messrs Austin & Seeley, who established their partnership around 1841, when they issued their first catalogue A Collection of Ornaments at Austin & Seeley's Artificial Stone Works for Gardens, Parks, and Pleasure Grounds, etc.. Another of their statues was formerly in the possession of Dolf Sweerts de Landas at Dunsborough Park, Ripley (H. Mallalieu, Amongst the Dealers, Country Life, 9 December 1999, p.77)
