Lot Essay

Samuel John Carter was born in Swaffham, Norfolk and studied in Norwich. He specialised in painting animals and sporting subjects and exhibited extensively. He was praised by John Ruskin for The First Taste (Royal Academy 1875). Examples of his work are in the Tate and in Preston.
