Lot Essay

This form of Lady's wardrobe, combining drawer-nests and 'clothes press' commode, relates to the 'dwarf' wardrobes supplied for Tatton Park, Cheshire in 1812 by Gillow of London and Lancaster. This wardrobe of silken-figured maple, is fitted with a china-railed gallery, and is likely to be the 'Wardrobe' recorded in the '1839' inventory together with a 'Maple' chest-of-drawers in the Duchess of Bedford's Dressing Room.

This lot is a near pair to lot 899, sold from Property of Two Ducal Collections, Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire; Christie's House Sale, 20-21 September 2004.
