Lot Essay

Inspired by Messrs. Stalker and Parker's Treatise of Japanning of 1688, this wine-cooler is almost identical to that presumably supplied to the 2nd Duke of Beaufort for Badminton House, Gloucestershire (illustrated in R. Gentle and R. Field, Domestic Metalwork 1640-1820, Woodbridge, 1994, p.318, fig.3). Further similar examples are published from the collection of the Dukes of Rutland at Haddon Hall, Derbyshire and in R. Butler and G. Walkling, The Book of Wine Antiques, Suffolk, 1987, p.110.
