Lot Essay

The present lot depicts the city wall of Utrecht near Wolvenburg. In the distance the Wittevrouwenbridge is visible with citygates at both ends. These gates were at that time the last remaining and were demolished in 1858, the year in which the present lot was painted. The Utrecht cathedral tower (Domtoren) is clearly visible in the distance.
