Lot Essay

Abraham van Calraet was much influenced by the work of his fellow Dordrecht painter, Aelbert Cuyp. A number of comparable landscapes with horses, all signed with the initials 'A.C.', were formerly attributed to Cuyp but are now considered to be the work of Van Calraet, whose technique is distinguished by smoother brushstrokes and a more monochromatic palette.
