Lot Essay

We are grateful to Professor Dario Succi for confirming the attribution to Cimaroli on the basis of a color transparency (written communication, 15 November 2004). In addition, Professor Succi notes that, in this 'raro capriccio', Cimaroli imitates the early works of Canaletto in using red and brown pigments and strong chiaroscuro. He dates it to between 1725 and 1730.
