From a service owned by the Forbes family of New York which featured extensive serving pieces including an oxhead soup tureen. Some now in the collection of the Rhode Island Historical Society and illustrated by Mudge, op. cit., p. 205. Most likely this unusual bird was the result of a Chinese porcelain painter mixing elements of the familiar phoenix with the foreign United States eagle.
