The Brilliante, shown here flying a merchant flag initialled in gilt MAS, was owned by Miguel Alves Sousa of the shipping family of Macao and Lisbon. Howard & Ayers, op. cit., p. 228, illustrate a plate from the service, which they suggest may have been used aboard the ship.
