A GRISAILLE SHIPPING BOWL
CIRCA 1785
Finely painted in tones of grisaille with a continuous scene depicting a large ship moored in an estuary being loaded with its cargo, numerous smaller ships anchored offshore and European figures busy on the quayside, fortified warehouse visible on the far bank, in the interior a roundel with a quiet backwater scene beneath a border of grisaille diaper edged in lime green and gilt
14¼ in. (36.2 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

After a 1745 painting by Joseph Vernet, known in English as Sea Port in Foggy Weather and now in the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Algiers, which was then engraved by Jacques Aliamet (1726-88). A very similar bowl was in the collection of Rafi Y. and Mildred Mottahedeh, sold Sotheby's New York, 30 January 1985, lot 134, and then in the J. Louis Binder collection, sold Christie's London, 17 June 2003, lot 77.
